I’m currently recording an audiobook (in video format version still) for A as a gift. It is a book we’ve read together that means a lot for us, and she already recorded an audiobook for me - To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. We’ve read Orlando Review by her this year as well.

Regarding the technical setup, I’m using OBS Studio with the DroidCam plugin. I got it on my iPhone and paid a one-time fee to not have the watermark - even though you could watch an ad to not have the logo appear for one hour or so.

Advantages:

  • The files are stored on my desktop, so I do not need to transfer data from my phone back and forth
  • The audio input can be adjusted (filtered, compressed) beforehand
  • Easier to manager from me the whole process of recording, as I’m using my laptop for everything (besides positioning the phone)

Disadvantages:

  • Occasional lags. While the audio was all nice and well on my desktop, the video was lagging behind. In one instance, it stopped; probably because of extensive usage, but nonetheless.

To minimize the disadvantages, I simply try not to record the video snippets to be that long.

Further on for this project, might look around for Audacity if needed, and ffmpeg could be useful as well. ShotCut does the job well for simply cutting video snippets.
