In his video on why gen AI is “bad” for art, or we cannot compare to other AI usages, Theo mentioned how current products/companies target media generation are trying to replace the whole process (i.e. Sona to produce music, etc) instead of their services being part of the artist’s toolbox.
For instance, regarding code generation, we have Cursor (fork of Vscode) which does kinda the same thing. Better yet in this fashion, how Co-pilot was introduced. Software like Lovable though seeks to eliminate this toolbox altogether.
Another great tweet here:
Humans don’t use AI, they use tools. If AI lacks all the characteristics that define a tool humans WON’T use it. AI used to be a tool and it wasn’t always bad, think of things like background and subject selecting. They help them complete the task while giving the user complete control. Get rid of the text prompt. LLMs are not for the workplace! Language is flawed by nature and terrible groundwork for precision and control. Go back to presets, dials and controls we expect in our tools. Photoshop made many things in the creation process painless and easy the difference is every tool is engineered for a human to direct precisely.
